Within Catholicism, institutional celibacy has
retained a place of high regard.
Monks
and nuns take oaths to enter into Holy Matrimony, the former choosing to marry
the Church, the latter opting to become “brides of Christ”; in each case, each
is modeling his or her bond after the example set by the Holy Family, in which
devotion is completely untethered from carnality.
With the Protestant so-called Reformation,
however, a great inversion occurred; rather it should be termed a great regression.
With the instituting of the Reformation, New
Testament celibacy-favoring mores were rejected, and the carnal-centric mores of the Old Testament were re-embraced. In traditional Protestant culture, a man
who does not marry is inevitably looked upon askance; if he has no wife, it is
commonly believed, he must have no morals. Status-wise, he certainly possesses
no heft or clout; at best, he is regarded as an eccentric, and still looked
upon somewhat warily.
There is no place for monks, nuns, or any
other relic of papal “corruption” and “decadence” within the hallows of Protestant
Christendom, and pastors, like all men, must marry, lest they be suspected of
harboring undesirable tastes or proclivities. Thus we find the most ironic circumstance,
wherein the celibate-- whose chosen lifestyle is prized most by Scripture, as I
have shown-- is reviled most by those who would lay claim to Scriptural
dogmatism (i.e., the Protestant endorsement of sola scriptura).
POST-PROTESTANT
DEGENERACY
Of course, what I am describing is
Protestantism prior to the general
crack-up and collapse of the last half century in the West. Today, both
Catholic and Protestant societies are pitifully reduced specimens, neither one
resembling the bustling grandeur of its former self, both now dried-up husks,
the “sea of Faith” having receded and left them bereft.
Untrammeled hedonism—the great enemy of
cultural stability and facilitator of tyranny, since the fomenting of societal
disorder on a local level invariably facilitates a top-down crackdown-- now
reigns, and all forms of perversity are celebrated. In fact, the only acceptable
societal prohibition is on showing any sign whatsoever of being prohibitive of
perversion. In Dostoyevskian language, “All is permitted”… “all,” that is, with
the express exception of anything
which promotes moral traditionalism and aesthetic wholesomeness.
In such cultures, disciplined abstemiousness
is the most foreign and puzzling of behaviors. Such a manner of living can
serve little purpose to those who are accustomed to flailing about in filth and
furiously darkening their souls, all the while fancying themselves to be
freethinking and enlightened. What is more, those who decline to bathe in
excremental dissipation are regarded with suspicion, if not outright contempt,
if not abject panic, since such
people serve as an unwelcome reminder of that which a wicked age wishes to
forget: that men are meant to aspire to godhood,
not to be content with bestial degeneracy and a patently demonic dissolution of
spirit.
A sensually debauched age can barely even
comprehend the command to be chaste within wedlock, much less the more radical
call to abstain from venereal relations entirely. Yet mandatory orgastic
indulgence leads swiftly to alienation and despair. We are seeing such an
eventuality play itself out; the disillusionment of the once thoroughly
indoctrinated population of the debauched is taking place, quite strikingly,
right before our eyes. The prescription of excess is no longer even “sexy”; if
anything, it smacks of rank grotesquery and brittle horror.
Even the most entrenched libertine can only
find himself embarrassed by such queasily abominable propagandistic efforts as
“My Sex Junk” and “Ice Cream Sexuality”-- as broadcast on the Bill Nye Saves the World program-- in
which genderfluidity, bisexual promiscuity, and commands to indulge in every
imaginable permutation of perversity imaginable are unmercifully thrust into
the viewer’s face. And few defenders of the contemporary Zeitgeist, even those
who are “cult-marxed to the max,” feel terribly inclined to gather the strength
or summon the energy to defend a TeenVogue article detailing the exalted glories of penetrating another’s “glory hole” (i.e., anal sex).
The ubiquitous victory over modesty, decorum,
and decency has come at a severe price. Exhaustion has set in. The sexual
revolution has run its course, leaving untold destruction in its wake. Few have
been spared. The complete erosion of all vestiges of sexual morality has
unfolded over mere decades-- a remarkably short period of time for such a
frightful panoply of unwholesome transformation—leading up to the grim
circumstances of our horrific present.
Marriage, the former institutional staple of
civilization, now lies very much in ruins; most of what remains of it now
assumes a hideously disfigured form. Men and women’s worst instincts have been
summoned to the fore: the bestial elements of sexuality are endlessly
encouraged; the pornification of the culture leads men down the path towards
orgasm-addiction, while malignant feminism steers women into embracing the very
worst aspects of that biological drive known as “hypergamy,” a proclivity
which, if left unchecked, proves to be the utter undoing of stability and
harmony between the sexes.
