ALAIN DE BENOIST ON THE FRENCH ELECTION


French New Right thinker and "intellectual godfather of the Alt-Right," Alain de Benoist recently gave an interview to the Breton nationalist website Breizh-info.com. He was asked him his reactions to the first round of the French Presidential election, which saw the field narrowed down to civic nationalist Marine Le Pen and the "candidate of the broken system" Emmanuel Macron. The translation was done using online translation with common sense correction.

At a conference in Washington DC in September 2011 writer, musician and artist Alex Kurtagic delivered a lecture entitled "Masters of the Universe," in which he argued that we must win the cultural war against the Left as a necessary prelude to real political change. The speech, full of original and provocative ideas, fascinated me and I determined to ask Mr Kurtagic for an interview so that I might explore some of his ideas further. Fortunately, he agreed.


BAD FAITH: ISLAM, LIBERALISM, AND THE INAUTHENTIC FRENCH STATE


In the wake of the Friday the 13th terrorist attacks in Paris by Jihadist Muslims, the details of which are still emerging, I want to avoid writing another "I told you so" response, swathed in sentimental solidarity with the French victims, or deal with obvious "fall out" talking points, like Mossad's possible involvement, the question of restricting civil liberties or allowing citizens to carry guns, possible military responses in the Middle East, the effect on French Jews considering aliyah (emigration to Israel), the effect on the electoral fortunes of the Front National, and so on.

Instead I want to reflect on what the city means as a symbol, and consider how some very ‘Parisian’ currents of thought have led innocents directly to this slaughterhouse.

We—as a people—have no spiritual identity. Not that pan-Europeans lack spiritual impulse, or spiritual distinctions—we have all that, from New Age to Calvinism—what we lack is an identity of ourselves as a cohesive group of mutually respecting believers: a spiritual identity that encloses all of us as members of our Folk. And it has been to our detriment—it took a long time coming, granted—but we now face a withered future. Shriveled in spirit, shriveled in self-respect, shriveled in unity. We are decaying, spiritually, and have been doing so for a long time (almost 2000 years)—what’s more, it is just getting faster and faster—take the last 60 years as a mere foretaste of what’s coming.

IS ETHNIC REPLACEMENT 'UNDEMOCRATIC'?

On the traditional conservative Right, it is a commonly-heard refrain that the introduction of mass immigration and multiculturalism into European nations – hereafter referred to in less euphemistic terms as “ethnic replacement”, for that it what it amounts to in practice – was and is fundamentally undemocratic. For example, we have the view of Patrick Buchanan, who states that:
“What is most significant about [ethnic replacement in the USA] is that the American people never voted for it and do not want it. It is being imposed from above, anti-democratically, by a regime that refuses to enforce our laws and is now at virtual war with the American people.”

In banking jargon, a stress test is an analysis conducted under unfavorable economic scenarios, which is designed to determine whether a bank has enough capital to withstand the impact of adverse developments.

Stress tests focus on a few key risks to banks' financial health in crisis situations – such as credit risk, market risk, and liquidity risk. The results of stress tests depend on the assumptions made in various economic scenarios, which are described by the International Monetary Fund as "unlikely but plausible." Bank stress tests attracted a great deal of attention in 2009, as the worst global financial crisis since the Great Depression left many banks and financial institutions severely under-capitalized.

Many in our movement (however they decide to call it) detest banks. Anyway this is not a piece about banks, but about the way this movement failed its own first "stress test" in the Ukrainian crisis. This was the first serious problem that our movement faced that had to do with a real world situation, rather than the usual problems of old-style nationalism. The situation in the Ukraine was not a bickering between philosophical approaches. It was not personal stuff being turned into political. It was not colliding dreams. Instead it was a real problem in the real world, which called for us not to take sides but to choose wisely.

DECONSTRUCTING DEMOCRACY



Back in college, I remember my Sociology professor, a tough and politically incorrect old man, talk about the "EDSA Revolution." EDSA is a place in Manila where the "People Power Revolution" occurred in 1986, against the regime of former President Ferdinand Marcos. For many Filipinos, "People Power" or "EDSA" was one of the crowning moments of Filipino History. There were stories back then of how priests and nuns protected opposition politicians from snipers, and how old women on wheelchairs asked to be pushed to the front of the barricades.

THE INTELLECTUAL VACUITY OF THE OLD RIGHT

Translator's note: What follows is a selection I made from Alain de Benoist’s responses to an interview on the French Right that appeared in the quarterly review Éléments at the end of 2005 (#118). Benoist talks both about “the Right,” which refers to all the individuals and movements right of center, including the mainstream Right, and the “real Right,” which in an Anglo-Saxon context would be called the “Old Right.” The failure of the mainstream Right is well-known, and often commented on. But the failure of the “Old Right” is more difficult to deal with, as the men concerned (one thinks of Enoch Powell in Britain or Robert A. Taft in America) were most of the time well-meaning, courageous men, yet they failed. I removed most of the references to French history so as to make it understandable to a Pan-Western audience. Benoist's arguments are not without flaws — far from it. His call to go beyond Left and Right is contradicted by the fact that he goes far to the Left in this interview. But I believe this aspect is secondary. This text, thanks to a remarkable psychological analysis of the “right-wing mind,” is first and foremost a way for us to question our own way of thinking, thus making us more “fit and brisk” for the battle of ideas. It is the ideal complement to William Pierce’s “Why conservatives can’t win.”

The Right has never been fond of intellectuals. Little wonder then that the phrase “left-wing intellectual” has for a long time been a tautology. For many right-wing people, intellectuals are just unbearable. They visualize them sitting on a chaise longue, of course, and view them as “sanctimonious types” who sodomize flies, split hairs and publish books invariably described as “indigestible” and “boring.”

During the American election contest, I found myself paying less attention than ever to the arguments, campaign slogans, promises and gaffes made by both sides – and I have to admit to having felt somewhat guilty about this at the time. Despite my contempt for mainstream politics both in my own country and abroad, a nagging little voice persisted in scolding me that one should at least study these things in some measure of detail.

On second thoughts, and having perused the election results, I think I should have paid even less attention than I did. As America advances towards Multi-Racial Utopia, the content of the national debates and media circus around its elections is going to become about as relevant to their results as the spectacle of a surfer dancing on the crest of a wave would be to an oceanographer. Political programmes and arguments that might once have been worthy of debate are degenerating into irrelevant entertainment, as demography and caste become the true determining factors.
