The rise of Donald Trump is a good excuse to discover or rediscover one his most intelligent supporters, himself a former candidate for Republican leadership, Pat Buchanan. He has now become an unapologetic cheerleader of Donald Trump, defending with arguments and brains what Trump is yelling with a populist tone, thus giving an intellectual stature to the one the media portray as Donald Dumb.

It is always hard to pinpoint the best text to read and analyze when trying to understand someone who has written a dozen books and countless articles. The choice is subjective and might be misleading, but the New York Times bestseller The Death of the West sparked my interest. How could a book with such a Spenglerian title become so popular? And how could a book said to be that politically incorrect get such high rankings and recognition? I then decided that this would be the book I would read to better understand the American politician so often quoted by Guillaume Faye and other New Rightists.

Maybe we can ignore his boorish behavior. Let us also leave aside the question of whether he is sincere—in 2012 he complained that Mitt Romney’s “self-deportation” plan was inhumane and alienated Hispanics, then in 2015 he launched his Presidential campaign by claiming that Mexico was sending us criminals and rapists. During my first interview with Robert Stark, Robert and I concurred that the best ideological platform would be an eclectic mix of Pat Buchanan and Ralph Nader’s beliefs. We further discussed this stance when hanging out in SF, and Robert even requested that I dedicate a post to this issue. On account of the presidential campaign heating up, I figure that now is as good a time as any to honor his request and expand on this topic.

The Korean Crisis may blow over or it may not. But even if it does you can be sure that it’ll blow up again sometime in the future. The Kim Jong-whoever show is set to run and run, and not just for the entertainment of fans of James Bond, Thunderbirds, and Fu Man Chu. Underneath the absurdity of the fat kid with the bad haircut waving nuclear missiles about and demanding to be loved, there is a mother lode of realpolitik of the kind that would make the most ruthless American Neocons look like Mother Teresa.

Why is this happening there and now and not someplace or sometime else?

Tectonic plates give a clue. They also have to rub up against and subduct one another somewhere sometime, and in a sense this is what is going on. The Korean peninsula lies right on the geopolitical ley lines, and although all the attention is on Kim 3, this is only because the Chinese want it that way. The Korean crisis is just a tentacle of a much bigger beast, something to get us all excited while the other seven tentacles go about their nefarious tasks elsewhere.

A DOMESTIC ARCTIC ALLIANCE

John Derbyshire's "Arctic Alliance" proposal came out over half a decade ago. If you have not read it, stop reading this and read it instead. For such a fascinating idea it has been written about far too little; I suppose it touches on a few too many taboos. It seems no thinker aside from Derbyshire has written on it. Even Derbyshire himself rarely revisits the theory; last December was an exception when he wrote, "Preserving the Arctic Alliance." He makes passing mentions of it on occasion in his other articles and radio program, and I have found some chattering about it on internet message boards. Beyond that, there doesn't seem to be a thing. I am here to change that, and to explore the Arctic Alliance's practical potential, which Derbyshire has woefully ignored.
