EYE FROM THE RIGHT: "THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE"

Contemporary Media seen from the Right

Be careful what you wish for, so they say. Well, in Alt-Right circles, the idea of the Axis winning World War II might have some appeal. That’s what makes this Phillip K. Dick adaptation so compelling and even thrilling. It takes a look at a United States conquered by the Axis, and some of the intrigues this generates.

The geopolitics is certainly fun: everything from New York City now with a giant SS Building in the middle of it (echoes of Trump Tower?) all the way to the Mid West finding its "inner Teuton" as part of the Greater German Reich. There is also a thin sliver of "Free America" – a kind of no-man’s land or DMZ, the natural place for renegades and refugees – stretching from Denver down to Mexico. Then there is the West Coast, where instead of a patronizing interest in Zen and sushi, the Golden State and a few others are all part of the Empire of Japan. So, far so good!

SOUL HACKERS

With the closing of another year marked by media hysteria, the narrative that the crazed hermit North Korean regime orchestrated the hacking of the Japanese-owned Hollywood company Sony, thereby assaulting our precious freedom to crank out cultural subversion, has quickly begun to fall apart. From the beginning the story never held neither consistency nor any forensic evidence. Yet the notion that ruthless Korean dictator Kim Jong Un wants to keep them from the movies, the modern substitute for the West’s emptying churches, has sent cable news consumers into a panic.

ANDROID EXISTENCE

"In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet."

In his classic, prophetic novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, American science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick depicted a future dystopia where the only way to determine the difference between humans and rogue, bio-engineered androids was empathy: the latter were incapable of experiencing and thus demonstrating it.

THE STEPFORD STUDENTS AND THE MIDWICH MEDIA

Now and then the back end of the Liberal-Leftist train – i.e. the Conservative baggage car – makes a mournful, screeching sound as its slightly off-centre wheels dig into the rails down which the Leftist locomotive is dragging it. Such a screech resonates through a recent article in The Spectator, that bastion of old-school British conservativism that doesn’t really know what to do about the premises of the Liberal Left – except to lube well before being shafted by them in the best public school fashion.

RIGHT-WING 'LIBERALTARIAN' PRATFALL

It's good to see Gavin McInnes giving his usual sensitive take on the Islamic world, over at Taki's. Yes, he's right. Islam does produce plenty of newsworthy and easy-to-ridicule moments. For a writer of McInnes's sarkiness it must look like one hell of an inviting piñata, although the words "fish," "barrel," and "shooting" also spring to mind.
