THE LIMITS OF COMPASSION AND THE MORALITY OF NATIONALISM

In my last post, I used an image from a humorous meme called "Islamic Rage Boy," which uses well-timed photos to regale us with hilarious facial expressions. As funny as the pictures are, the man behind the meme, Kashmiri activist Shakeel Ahmad Bhat, has lived a rather harrowing life. It's no wonder he's so angry. If I were illiterate, crippled on account of being tortured, and had watched my sister get thrown out of a window, I too would be enraged; and to top it all off, the poor man is now an object of international ridicule.

The reason why I bring up someone like Islamic Rage Boy is because he made me ponder immigration, nationalism, and the supposed obligation that Western countries have to allow destitute people like Bhat to emigrate and seek a better life. Obviously, the nationalistic alt right would prefer that the likes of Bhat stay put in their home countries. But in my opinion, for nationalism to function as a truly powerful force, it requires more than a defensive fear about immigration and shifting demographics – as rational as such fear may be.

THE CONTINUATION OF GERMANY

What follows is the official English translation of an inspiring speech given on January 21st by Götz Kubitschek, a leader of LEGIDA (Leipzig gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes/ Leipzig against the Islamization of the West), an offshoot of the Dresden-based PEGIDA movement that has been making the headlines in recent months. The translation is by Nils Wegner.

Good evening Leipzig!

My name is Götz Kubitschek, it is my honour to speak to you tonight, and before answering the question for what we have been demonstrating tonight I want to stress three points:

What we are doing tonight is something perfectly normal. We are worried about our homeland's future, and we take to the streets because parliaments and editorial offices do not care about our worries.

What we are doing tonight is something courageous. It's not quite a piece of cake to make head against Leipzig's violent Leftist thugs.

WINNING AND LOSING IN SCANDINAVIAN POLITICS

Swedish Democrats: Nationalism with flowers.

Parliamentary politics is a dirty game played by dirty people in which the good guys almost always lose. But occasionally the least dirty of the dozen ends up with the winning hand. This is what happened when the mildly nationalist party, the Swedish Democrats, pulled the rug out from under the feet of the Social Democrats.

Having only been in power in the Swedish parliament for less than two months, the Social-Democrat-led minority government now has to schedule a new parliamentary election in March next year. This is thanks to the Swedish Democrats, who earlier this month voted against the proposed 2015 Finance Bill. This proved to be a genius move, and saw the Swedish Democrats soar to 17.7 % in the opinion polls, leaving the Social Democrats foaming at the mouth with anger.
