A recent surge of Alt-Right optimism, prompted by increased mainstream media attention as a result of the Trump campaign in the U.S., has apparently led some of us to believe that memes, trolling, and shitposting will pave a path to our political victory. Without wishing to spoil anyone’s fun, I think we should plan for a bumpier ride. Those tempted to place their eggs in virtual baskets should study the current affairs of China, particularly its proposed “social credit” system, and remind themselves that the internet requires only minor tweaking to go from a haven of free speech to a Matrix-like system of surveillance and coercion.

In the long term, then, we should develop strategies that lead us out of the online world, rather than keeping us dependent on it. But, conversely, we should also make the most of the internet’s formidable power to terrorise the Left and the false Right, as we do not know how long we can expect to have it at our disposal. To this end, we ought to clarify the role of transgressive trolling and the often shockingly iconoclastic material in which it deals.

WHAT TO MAKE OF "CUCKSERVATIVE"?

Just recently, the term “cuckservative” – popularized by the alternative right – has incurred the wrath of mainstream white conservatives. Gregory Hood and Matt Forney have both written excellent articles explaining what constitutes cuckservatism, so I don’t really have much to add in this regard.

I’ll just say that I embrace this term, as well as any friction that the word engenders. The term “cuckservative,” provided that it catches on, has the potential to reform an increasingly stagnant and feckless mainstream conservative establishment; as of now, the American right continues to get thoroughly trounced on just about every issue. Gay marriage is the law of the land, transsexuals such as “Caitlyn” Jenner are lionized, secularism reigns supreme, and non-whites continue to demographically eclipse the people who actually vote Republican.

Back in college, I spent two years in a dormitory called "Studio House," a residence hall for students with an interest in theater and the arts.

It wasn't anywhere near as faggy as it sounds, honest Injun.

The "Studio House" crowd, like most communities, developed its own distinctive lingo. Certain terms became hip and trendy, and caught on with nearly everyone. (I, however, was a consistently contrarian outlier on this front, being a curmudgeonly nonconforming grumpy old fogey even at the tender age of 19, albeit certainly vulnerable to manipulation in other ways.)
