Hitler and the SS have served as convenient scapegoats for the crimes committed by the entire German military in WWII. This notion that the normal army behaved with honour and humanity has helped to exonerate many German soldiers, whether they deserved it or not. But it has also served a more nefarious purpose, namely to associate an image of general decency with the wider project of the Third Reich, something that Neo-Nazis today continue to use to sell their ideology. YouTube historian Mark Felton takes a closer look at this "clean Wehrmacht" myth, focusing on its most illustrious "hero" Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and his supposed "war without hate" in North Africa.
