LIBERALISM IS TYRANNY

by Hewitt E. Moore
@hewittemoore

The problem that arises when you're the greatest nation in the history of the world, is that there's no real problems to deal with. There's no war. Anybody who wants a job can get one. Nobody starves to death. Everybody has access to medical care. Even beggars can make six figures a year.

IN DEFENSE OF ANTI-STATISM

Among alt-right commentators today, there is a general trend to sneer at libertarianism, as well as its more radical incarnation, anarcho-capitalism. The ultimate source of this cultivated sensibility seems to trace back to two main motivations:

WHAT THE ALT-RIGHT MEANS TO ME

Spot the true alt-righter in this crowd.

I recently posted a solo podcast called “AltRight Navel Gazing,” in which I expressed mild consternation and genial reproof over the proclivity of many alt-righters to bask in the newfound notoriety of the movement, as it continues to garner a degree of attention from the mainstream. (“Hey, look, guys, we’re being NOTICED!!! Ohboy ohboy ohboy, tomorrow really does belong to us…,” etc.)

This unseemly tendency to indulge in the promiscuous taking of online ideological-selfies has only been accentuated by the tribal triumphalism engaged in by many in the alt-right ranks surrounding the singularity of the Trump campaign. Though Trump-skeptical myself, I nevertheless understand and share in the general enjoyment that the totalitarian-oriented smelly little orthodoxies of our age are being heartily challenged, even if the man leading the charge is in all likelihood a egocentric opportunist (i.e., a politician).

CLASSICAL NIHILISM

It’s a common refrain among self-described conservatives and libertarians in America that both the modern bureaucratic managerial state and mass culture have veered wildly out of control, headed in an ever increasing totalitarian direction, and must some how be reined in. Their prescription is almost always a return to the Constitution, along with the supposed values of the Founding Fathers, and some form of classical liberalism; as one constitutionalist slogan declares, the answer to 1984 is 1776. What is often absent from sloganeering is any meaningful analysis of how society developed from the original republic to the current oligarchic, Leviathan surveillance state.

SOPHIE'S CHOICE

Sophie and Hans Scholl, commemorated on a 1961 East German postage stamp.

On February 22, 1943 – seventy-two years ago – three leaders of the dissident student movement The White Rose were executed by guillotine at the Stadelheim Prison in Munich, Germany.

Twenty-four year old Christoph Probst, 24-year old Hans Scholl, and his sister, 21-year old Sophie Scholl – all students at the University of Munich – were sent to their deaths mere hours after being tried and convicted for treason in what amounted to a show trial, presided over by the ogre-like "hanging judge" and infamous Nazi stooge Roland Freisler. Their "crime" consisted primarily in the fact that they printed up and surreptitiously distributed pamphlets which condemned the war and urged passive resistance to the Hitler regime. At no time did the White Rose movement ever practice or even espouse violence, but they were nevertheless shown no mercy by the totalitarian government they so vigorously opposed in print. Many more arrests and summary executions of other young people belonging to the group were to follow in the weeks and months to come.
