Every day when I get up, rub the dust of regret out of my eyes, and crawl over to look at the Intertube, someone has decided that someone else should never be listened to. Depending on who’s doing the shut-upping, this can range from white, heterosexual men to thots and cucks, but the mechanism is the same. Every day, more people fall into the pit: now white straight women should shut up. Now white gay men. Next it will be Jews (on both sides) and Asians, and finally, a month or two hence, only Ta-Nehisi Coates and anyone who kisses his ass hard enough will count anymore as People With Something to Say. Well, except for the slightly less media-empowered half of the US who are only listening to Tucker Carlson.

WHY SOCIAL MEDIA IS DYING

Over the past few months, it has become apparent that social media and real life are increasingly diverging. The proof of this is that people in real life — a wide range of classes, backgrounds and outlooks, but generally effective people and not mouth-breathing attendees to the civilization process — are interested in the stuff that social media ignores, and vice-versa.

JUDD NOT LEST YE BE JUDDED

Recently a former actress by the name of Ashley Judd, who incidentally appeared nude in each of her remotely memorable roles, was on social media and accused opponents of her alma mater’s basketball team of cheating. While such verbiage is the common and even expected grousing during such matches, reaction to her general mantra “We wuz robbed!” came swift and withering.

Apparently several users of the Twitter messaging system were unconvinced Miss Judd was qualified to determine whether unsportsmanlike conduct had occurred and proceeded to let her know so using a variety of colorful metaphors. Her emotions in tatters, she appeared on national television to pan for cameras and unambiguously state in her sassiest tone, “…and by the way I am pressing charges!”

Throughout the land a legion of millionaires from Fox’s Bill O’Reilly to MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart nodded in agreement; they being the types who can afford free speech protection even absent that explicitly granted mere plebeians by the Constitution.

SOCIAL MEDIA: FREAKSHOW FOR THE ANTISOCIAL

The internet has revolutionized the media of the West, and – because "the medium is the message" – it has also radically skewed our culture in new and unexpected directions. Before its advent the media was much more centralized. As a result, it tended to favour a corporatist approach along with small ‘c’ conservative values.

But now things have changed. Social media has become the driving engine of the "new media" and a major determinant of the news and opinion agenda. Those sites and publications that have adjusted themselves to this new clickbait reality are burgeoning. The rest are withering.

But has anyone besides Facebook (!) stopped to think about this in a systemic way? The old, centralized media naturally favoured the message of its paymasters and tended to project their values, but how about the new decentralized media with its powerful social media component? How does that work?

Back in February, around the time of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, I wrote an article Let the Internet Clone Wars Begin.

The point of the article was that America, either as a conscious entity or as an unfocused manifestation of its evil essence, exerts an undue amount of its power through its internet hegemony; and that any nation, civilization, or ideology determined to stand up to this, needs to construct its own alternative systems.

The monstrous predominance of default agnosticism—the reflexive mindset of our era—reinforces a terrible gloominess in the sensitive soul.

Those of a more obtuse psychic composition are able to avoid the snares inherent in such a circumstance, since—being frivolous by nature or by habit—they can slough off such rhetoric with the sort of automatically-generated aplomb supplied by their carelessly-cultivated shallowness. Unfortunately, it cannot be so for those mindful enough to follow premises through to their logical conclusions. These instead are like the one who, in the words of T.S. Eliot, found himself “much possessed by death/ And saw the skull beneath the skin.” For such as Eliot’s protagonist, being smacked in the face with the prospect of moribund, maggoty meaninglessness is simply too much to endure. Such seekers as these are aware of a need for greater nourishment than what they are being offered, else they will starve.
