DERBYSHIRE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT'S CROSSHAIRS

by Andy Nowicki

John Derbyshire, it seems, has penned a little article over at Takimag, one which has the good folks at the UK Guardian fulminating wildly and foaming at the mouth with rage, albeit in their impeccably polite, formal, prissy, stiff-upper-lipped manner:
In the piece, which Derbyshire wrote for Taki's Magazine, a self-styled "libertarian fanzine" run by controversial right-wing Greek socialite Taki Theodoracopulos, he suggests the outline of a "talk" that all such parents should give their children.

He suggests that they do not attend events where black Americans may be present in large numbers, avoid black neighbourhoods and do not be a "good Samaritan" to black people who appear in distress.

Derbyshire added: "If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving." He also suggested not living in an area run by black politicians. "If you are white or Asian and have kids, you owe it to them to give them some version of the talk. It will save them a lot of time and trouble spent figuring things out for themselves. It may save their lives," he concluded.
Why is this news, exactly? Somebody wrote an article at a website that some other people found objectionable. Gee whiz, that hardly ever happens! Nobody died, nobody was hurt... but people were offended! My, oh my. What a significant event. Certainly worthy of the attention of a major world newspaper, as I'm sure we can all agree.

After all, some things just can't be said. And the people who say those kinds of things must be made to suffer. They can't be allowed to keep their jobs, or for that matter to enjoy a moment's peace for the rest of their lives. They are worse than murderers and rapists, because the "vile" words they speak are themselves a murderous assault on our dearest-held notions of decency, goodness, and justice. Such people are HATE CRIMINALS, and they must be hounded and harassed unmercifully until they repent!!! (with many more exclamation points following on into infinity, to demonstrate our righteousness...)

After all, "tolerant" people don't "tolerate intolerance." Hey, ho, hate has got to go... And so forth. We all know the drill by now, don't we?

The overall gambit here is easy to discern: The Guardian wants to shame National Review Online to ditch Derb. Other establishment organs will no doubt soon pile on. Developments will be interesting to chart. Will NRO show a modicum of courage and fortitude and defend their columnist's right to his views, or will their resolve crumble as pathetically quickly as I suspect it will? We shall see.
