You think you live in a democracy because you've been told you live in a democracy. But is that actually true? Do you really live in one?
Do you, as a voter, whatever you may happen to believe in, actually get to vote for what you want? Or is it a case of merely voting against something you don't want and then just getting something else you don't want instead?
Given that there are only two real choices for voters in the UK, the US, and most other major Western countries, I would guess that it is the latter.
Let's compare.
How many genders are there? Well, Facebook, which is really concerned about censoring people for political reasons, really believes in choice and freedom in this area. It has decided that there are at least 58 genders.

58!!! No matter how warped, weird, or just plain "special" you are, you can certainly find something to fit you there, and if you don't like what you chose, there is always next week and another 57 varieties to try.
So, what about that most important choice of all, the one where we decide which politicians will supposedly represent us? How many will you have there? I mean, of course, real choices.
Yes two and you won't want either of them.
The same contrast applies to toothpaste.
Thousands of types, with different tastes, colours, logos, benefits, and prices. You can choose whatever you like. In fact you may never find your perfect toothpaste because there is literally too many to choose from, although luckily I found my favourite!
Yes, in such a relatively trivial matter you are allowed almost infinite choice, but in politics you only have two choices in Britain and America, or three if you choose to just waste your vote on a third, fourth, or fifth party that is systematically shut out from the gates of government by a system of institutional anti-democracy that automatically penalises anyone voting for a party outside of the big two.
An absence of democracy, remember, is tyranny, and that is exactly what we have in the West today -- unless you're buying toothpaste or changing your gender.
